Condoms – What are they Made Of?

Many choose condoms because they are the most common contraceptive method that protects them from unplanned pregnancies while also keeping them safe from STDs—many of which are life threatening. Yet, do you ever wonder what these rubber covers are really made of? Moreover, could the materials used in condoms actually have an effect on your health? By knowing what your condom is made of, you can make better choices on the particular brands available on the market.

The main ingredient

When you look at a condom pack, it usually contains a “main ingredient”. This is what the condom is mainly made out of. Most of the common brands will tell you if the pack contains spermicide, an ingredient that will kill sperm cells once it comes in contact with the condom.  Condoms that have spermicide are very effective in avoiding pregnancies, but some people may be allergic to the chemicals used to create it. Most of the condoms available in the market nowadays are made from latex, natural rubber, or lambskin.

Latex

The most common amongst all materials, latex condoms do not require extensive labor to make, which makes them easy to mass produce. Most consumers also prefer to use latex condoms because they feel more comfortable. They are thinner and stronger compared to other condom materials, and they can last for at least five years after manufacturing. Most latex condoms already have a little lubrication inside the packing. There are even certain latex condoms designed to be super thin.

Natural rubber

The first condoms were made from natural rubber. These did not last very long, having a shelf life of about 3 months. They are also thicker compared to other materials, yet they do not hold very long. One of the biggest downsides of natural rubber condoms is that many people are allergic to them.

Lambskin

Lambskin condoms are made from all natural materials. They are also known as organic condoms or skins. They are very thin and many people love to use them because they feel like nothing. The down side with organic condoms is that they are not effective in stopping sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.

Whether it is a synthetic or organic condom, it’s crucial to remember how important wearing a condom is. The next time you pick out a condom, check the label to see the materials it’s made from. If you have latex allergies for instance, choose a rubber made from other materials, like lambskin.
