Misericordia

The Essentials

It all started in 2002 when Parisian Aurelyen Conty saw some schoolchildren in Lima, Peru, wearing tracksuit school uniforms emblazoned with the word Misericordia, which means “compassion” in Spanish. It continued in Zapallal, a dusty Peruvian shantytown where a cheeky sign above the atelier door reads “La Cabaña de Alta Costura,” or “the haute couture shack”, where Conty designs his luxury retro-style sportswear for men and women in three emblematic colors: white for purity, sky blue for hope and navy blue for serenity. It ends in the hottest concept stores, from Paris to Tokyo, and on the backs of globetrotting trendsetters.

Ethic-Chic

Misericordia goes beyond conventional fair-trade standards, considering labor rights and the overall well-being of workers. It uses Pima cotton grown in Peru, as well as some organic cotton and polyester.

Hanes’ EcoSmart – Smart fibers for smart wearers

The utilization of recycled plastic bottles is often associated in the environmentally aware production standards of plastic-ware items, but in no way does this mean that this is the farthest recycled plastic bottles can be reused.

Recycled plastic bottles can be used in the creation of fabrics, as Hanes’ EcoSmart fibers have long revealed and established.

EcoSmart and Hanes

In line with Hanes’ environmental advocacies and corporate social responsibilities roster, EcoSmart stands to be one of the brand’s more well known eco-friendly initiatives, which is partnered by the brand’s practice of utilizing excess cotton items in the creation of socks and other small-size cotton products.

EcoSmart fibers, derived from recycled plastic bottles, is used to create fleece jackets, sweatshirts, sweatpants and shits, and is also used in the creation of athletic socks, matched with recycled cotton (at 55%), taken from excess cotton coming from the making of other products.

Initially launched in 2010, EcoSmart by Hanes has held a solid line of followers, not only because of EcoSmart items’ environmental advocacies, but also for the line’s comfort and durability factors.

Hanes’ eco-friendly initiatives haven’t only revolved around the use of recycled materials and organic hemp for its products, but have also taken other packaging aspects into consideration.

For one, the brand has taken steps in minimizing the size of how their products are packaged, folding them in ways which use lesser amounts of packaging material. The corrugated cardboard used in product packaging is also made with recycled materials, which contributes the lessening of paper-product wastage figures.

All in all, Hanes’, apart from being a trusted brand for quality cotton items, is also aware of Mother Nature’s current state, and with its EcoSmart line and in-brand advocacies, manifests the brand’s determination to make a difference.

Knots & Stones Jewelry

The Essentials

Knots and Stones (“K&S”) specializes in eco-friendly jewelry and accessories. Their products provide the socially conscious person with a stylish, eco-friendly alternative that does not compromise budget or sense of style. These handmade, high-quality and eco-friendly accessories come from seeds that have been sustainably harvested from the rainforests of South America, and become the core of wearable art with a connection to nature. K&S founder Andrea Rodriguez-Tarazi was born in Colombia where seed jewelry has always been a part of the country’s rich cultural tapestry. For centuries, indigenous communities have used colorful seeds from the rainforest to artfully craft beautiful necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Ms. Tarazi is excited to bring a little bit of South America’s beauty to her adoptive home.

For K&S, it’s not about a trend. It’s about finding that little piece of the world that you can connect to and own. The brand is style and message all rolled up in a gorgeous little package you can take home and enjoy.

Ethic-Chic

K&S jewelry incorporates various seeds that have been sustainably harvested from the rainforests of South America, along with other organic materials like orange peel and vegetable fibers. The most commonly used seed in K&S designs is the tagua nut, which is also known as vegetable ivory, corozo, coquilla, or palm nut. The seed resembles ivory when it is dried and can be carved to create jewelry, buttons and sculptural pieces. Unlike ivory, however, tagua is a renewable resource. Consequently, the use of tagua helps to ensure the survival of the rainforests by promoting reforestation and providing an alternative source of income for its inhabitants. Other seeds used in their jewelry include acai, chocos/huayruros/pionias, chirilla/achiras, chambimbes/soapnut, ojo de buey, orejeros, acacias, dalmatas, mate, chuapos, carambolo, enebro, diente de leon and bombonas.
